Bridgewater Canal

Aqueducts come thick and fast of the Bridgewater, and a particularly interesting one can be found in Stockton Heath, which carries the canal over both the road and the river.

Coopers Aqueduct

Coopers Aqueduct
BCN Mainline
February 2010

I went out on a lost canal hunt last weekend, and remembered that an aqueduct exists carrying the River Tame under both the New Mainline and the adjacent railway at Sheepwash Park.

Our journey from the Haines Branch to the Dunkirk Branch took us right past the entrance, so here it is. Effective but uninspiring!

RIver Weaver Aqueduct

River Weaver Aqueduct
Middlewich Branch Canal (SUC)
22.4.10

A recent trip along the Middlewich Branch Canal afforded an opportunity to have a goof look at the River Weaver Aqueduct.

Weaver Aqueduct - North

The descent down a very high and steep embankment was a bit perilous but afforded me a good view of the big central arch, and the two smaller flood relief arches.

Weaver Aqueduct - south

Lickily the water level was down so I walked through the western flood relief arch and capturesshots of both fides of this impressive blue brick construction.

Anderton Boat Lift Aqueduct

Anderton Boat Lift Aqueduct
Trent and Mersey
21.4.10

I hadnt really thought about the Anderton Boat Lift having an aqueduct till the lift keeper instructed me to move onto it. But when I later viewed it from the side it is indeed an aqueduct, and an impressive one at that.

The boat lift lowers craft 50 feet from the Trent and Mersey to the Weaver Navigation and an approach chute is needed to get boats into the cassions. Both ends are protected by guilloting gates to prevent water loss.
