Dunkerton Big Aqueduct

Dunkerton Big Aqueduct
Somersetshire Coal Canal (disused)

Another aqueduct on the disused line of the Somersetshire Coal Canal, mid way along the summit pound to Paulton. This structure saved from railway obliteration thanks to it being located on a kink in the line of canal, which the railway cut off.

  1. This image does not in fact show Dunkerton Big Aqueduct (also called Severcombe Aqueduct), it shows the entrance to the tunnel at the east end of the aqueduct (the canal went underneath the road, which is now the A367). Here's an image of the actual aqueduct:

  3. There's another surviving aqueduct on the Somerset Coal Canal - Stoney Littleton aqueduct, on the south branch of the canal, leading to Radstock. The aqueduct only held water for a few years before the whole branch was converted to a horse-drawn tramway. A railway was built over/onto the south side, but the north side can still be seen. Feel free to use my image here if you like: http://www.canalmania.co.uk/v/dom/somerset_coal_canal/south_branch/101_stoney_littleton_aq.gif.html
